Bates welcomes students with a variety international backgrounds and experiences to apply. Non-U.S. citizens, dual citizens and permanent residents with the United States, and Americans studying abroad for secondary school all contribute to the dynamic global community at Bates. In total, over 80 countries are represented among the Bates student body.
Application procedures for Bates, as well as other American colleges, are quite different from those in many other countries. Eligibility
- If English is neither your native language nor the primary language of your secondary school instruction, then results of an English-proficiency test, the TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test, are required. The Office of Admission accepts all versions of the TOEFL or IELTS tests.
- Standardized test like SAT, TOFEL, IELT etc are Optional.
- Must be academically intelligent. And that should reflect on your grade.
- you will have to submit your high school (AKA secondary school) grade result. It is advisable for your school chancellor to send those grade on your behalf. If you are in West Africa, you also have to submit your final WASSCE result or any equivalent national exam result.
- Students completing national or international exams are required to submit these results directly from the testing agency once they become available.
- Deadline extension will not be provided. Hence apply ASAP (As Soon As Possible).
- Kindly note that you must have started your application to be admitted into the university before you start filling out financial aid.

All required materials for first-year applicants are detailed on the regular decision and early decision checklists. International students are defined as students without U.S. citizenship. This definition does not include U.S. dual citizens, permanent residents, or U.S. citizens living abroad.
